Lamu Cultural Festival kicks off with massive tourist influx into the Kenyan coast
The Kenyan Government has made heavy deployments of security officers in a bid to enhance security in Lamu and the surrounding areas as part of preparations for the annual event and Hotels and other accommodation facilities in Lamu are gearing up for roaring business as thousands of local and international participants find their way into the iconic island for the 18th edition of Lamu Cultural Festival with effect from today 22nd November, 2018 running up to Sunday 25th with an estimate of 50,000 Local, regional and international revelers expected to be in attendance.
Lamu Old Town earned a spot in the coveted UNESCO’s List of World Heritage Sites in 2001 because of its unique cultural heritage passed down for over 700 years.
Dr. Betty Radier who is the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) Chief Executive Officer says this annual event continues to attract growing numbers of local and international tourists annually with this year’s theme “Tembea Lamu”, the event will showcase the diverse and distinct Lamu cultural dances, poetry, henna painting, displays of handicraft and unique competitions such as dhow and donkey races to spice up the festival.
She says, “Lamu Cultural Festival is among the key events that KTB is supporting in line with the tourism product diversification strategy agenda to showcase Kenya’s rich cultural diversity.”
Such events are a concrete confirmation of Kenya’s continued support and promotion of the traditional safari and beach attractions with the local residents willing to exchange their great experience of Lamu with the other international tourists with a joyous slogan in Kiswahili, “Lamu Tamu” translating to “Lamu is Sweet”
